Environmental Justice

No Community Should Suffer Because of Where They Live

Environmental justice is the principle that every person — regardless of tribe, race, color, national origin, or income — deserves equal protection under environmental laws and equal access to a clean, safe, and healthy environment.

In the Niger Delta, decades of oil extraction, gas flaring, and industrial activity have placed a disproportionate environmental burden on local communities. Mac-Jim Foundation works to ensure these communities are not left behind — that their voices are heard, their rights are protected, and that the benefits and burdens of the environment are shared fairly.

We engage government institutions, oil companies, civil society, and communities to advocate for policies and practices that are equitable, inclusive, and just.

Mac-Jim Foundation addresses environmental justice through four interconnected areas of advocacy and community action:

🌳 Forest & Land Rights

Communities in the Niger Delta have an inherent right to their ancestral forests and land. We advocate against illegal land seizures, forced displacement, and the destruction of community forests by industrial activities.

🤝 Indigenous Rights

Indigenous communities must have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their land, resources, and way of life. We work to ensure free, prior, and informed consent is respected in all development activities.

⚖️ Policy & Legal Advocacy

We engage lawmakers and regulatory bodies to strengthen environmental laws, ensure their enforcement, and close loopholes that allow corporations to operate without accountability in the Niger Delta.

📢 Community Voice & Participation

Affected communities must be active participants — not passive observers — in environmental decision-making. We build civic capacity and create platforms for communities to engage, report, and demand accountability
